Background Information I have completed my Bachelor degree of OT from University of Western Sydney (4 years full time course, Sydney, Australia), which is accredited by WFOT. Education and Working credentials I have worked with client having different health conditions and needs (across most age groups), in quite a range of area including inpatient, outpatient, rehab (cardiac, neuro, upper limb, paeds etc), hand therapy, aged care, home modification, equipment prescription etc. Assistance request The reason for me email is, I am planning to visit Mumbai in October-November 2011 with the intention of migrating back to India (depending on family and work conditions). Can you please assist me in answering the following queries? • Can you please let me know if I can register myself as OT in Mumbai/India and if yes what is the procedure? • Is it possible to get contact details of OT practicing in Mumbai and/or India? • Can I possible meet some OT and if possible, observe them practicing in the different areas (just to have a feel of the way things are practices in different countries)? • Details of manufacturers/suppliers of OT/products in India with contact details if possible? Thank you for following up with my request, I am looking forward to hear from you. Please contact me if you need any more information Kind regards Imran Maniar Senior Occupational Therapist Phone (Mobile): 00 61 404 254 086 Email: maniarimran@yahoo.com maniarimran@yahoo.com Dandenong North Melbourne Australia

Sonal Gohel Hello, I just graduated from doing my Bachelors of Science in Psychology. I am pursuing Occupational Therapy as a career. I was researching and came across this website. I had no idea India is now booming with this field I thought it would have still been underestimated due to the mental aspect of the field. I really really enjoyed browsing through the website. I am planning on coming to India next year, and was wondering if the AIOTA or any of the medical centers would allow me to volunteer or observe? I would like to see the difference between different countries, and I feel it will allow me to get more insight in the field that I plan on pursuing!! Thanks, Sonal Shgohel@gmail.com Houston, Texas (United States)
MOHD AMIR SIDDIQUI I am so sorry to be sharing this news with you, Professor Gary Kielhofner has asked that we let you know some very difficult news.Gary has cancer that has moved from his lung to his brain and spine. He was recently hospitalized, is stable, but his condition is very serious. Gary is being supported by his close family right now and has the best medical care.I know that both Gary and Renee would be lifted up knowing that your warm thoughts and concerns are with them. It would be wonderful to share your well wishes and memories with Gary and Renee. They are not accessing e-mails and so your letter/message can be sent to moho_c@yahoo.com and we will ensure they receive the messages.I know that we are all very worried about Gary, and we are together as a community in our concern and support for him. Please send all your warm thoughts and positive energy his way. aamir_siddiqui93@aol.in RIYADH MILITARY HOSPITAL,RIYADH(KSA)

MOHD AMIR SIDDIQUI I think it may be helpful to bear in mind that reducing anxiety involves sutaining a balance of valued occupations, not just an increase in relaxing ones. This may involve providing opportunites to engage in a whole range of occupations as well as sharing the importance of engaging in occupations, whether 1:1 or in groups. I'm attaching two group profiles that may give you some ideas for groups that provide an alternative to anxiety management. aamir_siddiqui93@aol.in RIYADH MILITARY HOSPITAL,RIYADH(KSA)

SAM desouza India has always been a great country to practise OT. its a shame to hear from mates that 90% of OT's who graduate from India leave the country for foreign shores! there should be compulsory at least 5 years work commitment for OT's to live and work in India before they could leave the country. this shouyld come as part of membership rules with AIOTA. I hope we have great number of Therapists for this great Country! SAMDAL101@GMAIL.COM SYDNEY AUSTRALIA

arun sharma OTR/L, C CHECK OUT WEB SITES LIKE EXPLORINGHANDTHERAPY.COM A i am sure that there are a lot of OTs practicing independently in different specialities. A22S@HOTMAIL.COM ORLAND PARK , IL
Mohd Amir Siddiqui Hello Arun sharma! Thanks for your kind thinking regarding occupational therapy proffesional and suggest the need of sub-speciality areas like hand and upper extremity rehab, pediatric OT, industral rehab and ergonomics etc.Now this is proved that an O.tist can independently treat and provide rehab program to these population.I hope inshallah our curriculum and training will be updated.I am fully agree with my friend.keep it up Arun.I wll pray for u!!!!Khuda hafiz aamir_siddiqui93@aol.in Jamia hamdard, new delhi
arun sharma OTR/L In order to develop OT we need to identify sub-speciality areas like hand and upper extremity rehab, pediatric OT, industral rehab and ergonomics etc. our courses need to be updated with future vision. especially in hand and upper extremity rehab. i am CHT (check htcc.org or asht.org) working in upper extremity rehab. for almost 10 yrs now. i see clients with rotator cuff repairs, crush injuries , shoulder replacements etc and i start and finish their rehab. without using any PT services. i have developed reputation with surgeons bby continuously doing good work and getting my education updated , getting hand therapy certification etc. we did not have any of these things in our bachelor course and in internship we only did activites like sanding, putty etc but we did not have any splinting, casting or additional studies like common occupational injuries or surgical procedures. i am talking bout 10-15 yrs ago. list is long.... in nut shell we need drastic changes in our curriculum and training keeping in view the changing requirement of the industry. right now most OT are suffering from identity crisis and do not know about their role in rehabilitation. so please ... update education , create oppurtunity in areas like orthopedic surgery dept. for upper extremity rehab. imagine getting a call from surgeon to make splint for malllet finger or fabrication thumb spica for bad sprain etc. we need training in all these field and need to get OT in to other fields apart from long term care , or mental health . this is hard truth but i will be glad to get other's views. A22S@HOTMAIL.COM ORLAND PARK , IL

DEEPAK JOSHI I suggest that all occupational therapy institutions in India should hold AIOTA recognition and aiota should also take steps to set up uniform acaedemic curriculum all over india so that aiota can monitor where our proffesion is proceeding at it's base as in many institutions in india curriculum is needed to b updated...i request aiota to look in this matter and take definite steps DJ_17MAR@YAHOOMAIL.CO.IN DELHI,INDIA
